Alexander A. Green

Dr. Alexander A. Green is an assistant professor in the Biodesign Center for Molecular Design and Biomimetics at the Biodesign Institute and the School of Molecular Sciences at Arizona State University. He obtained his B.A.Sc. in Engineering Science from the University of Toronto and his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Northwestern University, where he developed methods of separating carbon nanotubes and graphene according their physical and electronic properties. Dr. Green then conducted postdoctoral research at the Wyss Institute at Harvard University where he devised RNA-based devices called toehold switches and co-developed methods of deploying them in paper-based diagnostics. Since starting his lab at Arizona State University in 2015, Dr. Green has established a research program in synthetic biology exploring the applications of computer-designed RNAs for low-cost detection of pathogens and for biomolecular computing in living organisms. Dr. Green is a 2017 Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow in Computational and Evolutionary Molecular Biology and the recipient of an NIH New Innovator Award, a DARPA Young Faculty Award, and an Arizona Biomedical Research Commission New Investigator Award.
