SPEAKERS

Keynote speakers will be given 60 minute time slots for talk and questions. We recommend using at least 5 minutes for questions, but the actual division of time will be left to each speaker's discretion.

​Standard presentation format is 15 minutes, followed by 5 minutes of questions, for a total of no more than 20 minutes. To ensure equal time for each of our many speakers, scheduling will be strictly adhered to. Please plan your presentation accordingly.

​An LCD projector, laptop, and overhead projector will be available for each presentation. Please let us know if you have any special requirements that were not indicated with your abstract submission.

WORKSHOPS

Two workshops will be offered concurrently on Friday, May 4th, 2018 from 10am - 1pm.

"Introduction to the Linux Shell"


Nowadays, researchers working in fields ranging from astrophysics to molecular dynamics, genetics, and bioninformatics, need to use Linux to be able to handle their computational needs. Linux is one of the most advanced, powerful and extremely efficient operating systems. Learn the basics of how to use the Linux shell in a couple of hours. Very useful for users with no experience in the Linux command line shell. No previous experience is required. Learn to navigate the file system of a computer and manipulate files and commands using one of the most powerful operating systems by using simple but extremely powerful commands in a Linux terminal.

* Software Requisites:
You will need a laptop with a Linux-like environment. If you are using a machine with MS Windows, we recommend installing one of the following command line tools:

Workshop by OCCAM:

“Introduction to Surface Characterization”
The Ontario Center for Characterisation of Advanced Materials (OCCAM – www.occam.utoronto.ca) is an interdisciplinary research center built around state-of-the-art electron microscopy and surface characterization tools.Operating in a collaborative research mode, OCCAM provides not only access to >$20M of leading-edge electron microscopy and surface analytical instrumentation, but also dedicated full-time scientific research staff. In this session, OCCAM research staff will not only familiarise attendees with OCCAM’s operation and facilities, but will provide an introduction to various techniques available within the facility (SEM, ETEM, FIB, XPS, SIMS, SAM, AFM, and LEIS). Topics will include the types of information available, variants of experiments that are possible, and complementary analytical approaches. Practical aspects of accessing and performing experiments (sample suitability/preparation), as well as data treatment/analysis will also be presented.

Two 1-hour general poster sessions will be held on the ground level of the Earth Sciences Building (5 Bancroft Ave) on Saturday, May 5, from 11:15 AM - 12:15 PM and 3:15 - 4:15 PM. The maximum poster dimensions are 4 feet by 6 feet.

Registrants who are presenting a poster at CBP are eligible for a 10% discount in poster printing through UTPoster! To receive this discount, place your order at www.utposter.com with the coupon code “PBC8” (valid until May 4th). Posters ordered through UTPoster can be  picked up directly at the CBP registration desk on May 4th from 12:30 – 1:30 if you place your order before May 3rd at 2:00 pm and approve the e-proof for printing before May 3rd at 3:00 pm; you can pick up your poster at any other time at UTPoster at 339 Bloor St W. Payment method is cash or lab credit card; no personal credit cards can be used for the discount order.

PARKING LOCATIONS

The University of Toronto Parking and Transportation Services provides a comprehensive list of campus parking lots. Some quick recommendations for parking on campus can be found on the University of Toronto parking PDF and interactive maps. We recommend the following locations for convenience:
  • Bahen Centre Garage (B.C.I.T.): 213 Huron St. Note, you need to find the stairway exit, not the elevator exit because the elevator exit leads to inside the building, which is closed off.
  • Graduate House Garage: 17 Glen Morris St. 
  • Rotman Garage: 107 St. George St. 
  • McLennan Physics Garage*: 60 St. George St. Note, the entrance is off of Russell St.  
  • Best Institute*: 112 College St. 
  • Banting Institute*: 100 College St.
  • 88 College St. Parking*
  • 155 College St. Parking*
  • 256 McCaul St. Parking Lot*
  • King's College Circle and Hart House Circle is another option, but please check its availability for overnight parking.
*Note that these campus lots are only available for Pay & Display parking weekdays after 5 p.m. and all day weekends.

Green P parking is also available.
